Blog 11-3-15 – Things are late, and unfortunately will continue to be late

Hello followers and viewers. I value my schedule highly, and I believe I have done a good job over the last long while of keeping up with that schedule. That being said, if you view my content with any regularity you will have seen that I have been late the past few weeks on a few things, and have unfortunately exceeded previous records of my own lateness. This is especially not fun for me with my comics, which I consider the core of my online content.

Now I don’t want to just make excuses, but I have had a few things happen recently that have made progressing more difficult. I moved into a “limbo” situation that has not gotten resolved as quickly as I had hoped, and makes my work and living environments undesirable from a “getting things done” or “moving around comfortably in clear spaces” kind of way. I’ve also had to change jobs to one with irregular hours that prevents me from being in “work mode” for my various comic and article writing/drawing. And finally I have a large project I’ve been working on with a very hard deadline that is very behind schedule. I’ll talk about that more as it nears completion.

So with all of those things I was still able to be on top of things for a while, but it wasn’t going to last. And it looks like things will be problematic for a little while longer. I hope you can bear with me while I work this out, and I hope to have all of the items I have been late on and caught up to all of the new content by the end of November, but it might end up closer to the end of the year. I hope you enjoy the content regardless and I hope your holiday season is less stressful than mine is going to be.

Best Wishes,

Austin Smith

Update 9-3-15 – Books and Big Bend Comic Con

This update comes a little close to the event due to strange circumstances and problems with moving, but it is still here before the event it is discussing.photo-88
This weekend I will be attending the Big Bend Mini Comic Con in Alpine, Texas as an artist. It’s at Sul Ross State University on Saturday the 5th from 1-5 pm. At this event I will be premièring 2 new books and 2 updated versions of my previous books, as well as having my last two compilations for sale as well.photo-89
The two new books are collections of Spiffy the Frog and One Off Beat. They will join updated editions of my not-available-online books Sturmpanzerwagen and Drak Pouste, and my two previous collections of All Life, No Lemons and Panzerkampfwagen. Shortly after this convention, these new books will be available on Amazon and the Createspace e-store. And additional post will be made when that happens.photo-85
I hope you enjoy your Labor Day weekend and festivities and I hope if you’re in the Big Bend area you can come down to the Con and say hello!

Dice Comics Hiatus

Hello followers, and people just stopping by. I’m sorry to say, due to many recent problems that I have had, I will have to scale back on some of my projects. At the moment the only visible effect this will have will be the indefinite hiatus of Dice Comics. I believe I had to pick one comic to end (for a while at least), and the one I was getting the least feedback on and was the least excited about doing every week was Dice Comics. So the end of this chapter has already been written. If at some point in the future, enough people are interested, or I feel I’ve come up with enough fresh jokes I might bring it back up, but for now there are only 2 Comics left.

Reaching Milestones

Reaching Milestones is a strange feeling. I’m just never sure how to react. Last week I reached 2,000 posts on the main Dragon Company site (as well as 1337 posts on Tumblr, but that’s just kinda funny)(and yes, that was all me so far). And just yesterday I reached 400 Walking the Roosters comics, out of over a thousand total comics, which I can’t even believe I did.

2000 Posts on my website

I definitely (I’m glad that didn’t autocorrect there) feel grateful to the people who encouraged me to work at this thing that I enjoy doing; blogging/comics etc. But I almost just don’t believe I did it. It’s almost like when I turned 18, which happened fairly recently as well. Suddenly you expect something to happen, and nothing happens. Everything feels the same but it feels like it shouldn’t feel the same.

My followers are still low on Tumblr

My followers are still low on Tumblr

But nothing incredible and major happened when I reached a large number of posts. Instead, the amazing thing is that I can look back and see all of the Likes, and Comments, and Followers I’ve built up over the time it took to get that many posts. All those people (hopefully you), though not as numerous as other followings, made my posts an achievement. People enjoying them, hopefully, is what makes them worth doing as opposed to reaching a nice-looking number for their total. The fact that even on my posts that get one Like, one person enjoyed that enough to like it makes me feel more accomplished than any number does. (And since I have to be cynical at least once here: I don’t have the potential to make some money if no one likes it.)

So thank you, everyone who has read and will read my various internet material. I hope to see you at the next milestone.

2014 Site Update – Stuff For the New year!

Yeah! It’s 2014! And that means… it’s 2014. Well for me, that means some changes. Some are good, and some are… well “I” think they’re all good, because they make things better for me, but some might cause some inconvenience for your viewing, for which I apologize.

But to start with the good, I’m going to be doing a new comic! Yes, that means there will be 13 a week for all tastes, and some extras here and there. The new strip will be called 万年筆(man’nen’hitu): The 10,000 year brush. It will be about fountain pens, which I admit is a niche market, but no other strip will be removed or paired down to accommodate it. This is a straight-up addition.  Also, I will be working on a comic in a large format that will be more serious, but less frequent. And don’t let the seriousness fool you, it’ll still be a lot of laughs hopefully, but no dates yet. (万年筆 Starts this friday)

Back in November I released five new books in the fifth wave of my collections. Most of them are available at the Antelope Lodge in Alpine, while a few are also available in other spots in the area. But for those of you who are not near me I also launched an online store, where you can buy my books and a few other goodies. I recommend checking it out, but of course I would.

Speaking of updates to the site, I had to move all of my video content over from Blip.tv to Youtube, I have a blog post explaining this, but it means I’m going to start placing ads on previously ads-free videos.  That shouldn’t be much of a big deal with the way most online videos work now. But I will make sure that the video is at least a certain length (6 minutes or more?) before placing any ads, so as not to waste too much time. Also, I am now going to be placing (relatively few) ads on the site. You can see one in the sidebar already, and I will be putting more out to see where they are the least intrusive over the coming months. I hope you understand that I do need to pay for this site eventually somehow, and right now I’m not cutting it.

Ads might also be going up on the next place I’m going to mention, The Dragon Funnies, which I upgraded to a full site this year, but right now I need to get them up andy working. As for my content on the site, the new comic won’t be added, and some of the other comics might be removed as well, but this does not mean the site is going away. For every comic I take off I will be looking into putting comics from other talented cartoonists up. I want the site to end up like the newspaper comic section I would make, and so I intend to find the best content possible for it. It is also possible to submit a comic for the site, though if I don’t have any personal contact with you at the moment the most I can offer is exposure, which isn’t the best thing to offer right now, so, yeah. I will be working on a better way to get new comics up on the site while properly compensating their creators.

Also, come this new year I will be attempting to use more social media, posting as much content as I can on Twitter and Facebook, so if you feel the subscribe system on the site is a bit clunky, then you can follow there and get the highlights.

Now for the only bad news. Due to the high volume of content I produce, I have already stopped posting on redundant sites like the individual blogs for each of my comics. And at the end of January I will be ceasing posts on the Dragon Company wordpress site and Art Supply Critic WordPress site. All of that content is already posted on my main site, so nothing is going away, I’m just making it less of a hassle for me to post the content, and like I said, links will be posted in social media if you don’t want to subscribe.

All in all, I hope 2014 will be a good year, and it looks like it will be, so I hope to see you all there, and I hope y’all have a great time.
