Book Review – The Perpetual Motion Machine by Paul Scheerbart

The Perpetual Motion Machine by Paul Scheerbart is a “nonfiction” book from the turn of the 20th century that documents the attempts of German novelist and “optimist” (my term) to create a perpetual motion machine. The book has several portions that are journal entries and several “essay” portions that talk about the effects of the machine. Interspersed in necessary areas are 26 diagrams of his attempts to create the machine.

Needless to say, the man wasn’t successful (though, on the final page, he claims to be), but the book is still an interesting read. The outside presents itself as a more scientific work, but right off the bat, the author describes himself as seeing wheels at all times of the day and how he is driven to attempt to create his machine. There is little sense behind why he keeps pushing on, beyond his relentless optimism that there is a solution. Quickly, though, he dreads a solution, as he is afraid of the military using the invention for war, or he fears that providing infinite energy to the people of the world would destroy civilization, not bring it up. At times, both their being and not being a solution are equally terrible to him.

The machines presented in his diagrams are themselves quite simple and it’s easy to understand why they don’t work if you have a basic understanding of forces. Some have wheels spinning in the wrong direction, but most would require friction to be completely absent. Indeed, all of the models he constructed never did work, but he blames his lack of mechanical ability for this and not the idea that a perpetual motion machine can’t work. He has plumbers and mechanics set up the devices and they don’t work either. Nevertheless, he applies for patents anyway.

The meat of the book, though, is really his essays on what the future would be like with such a machine. He describes tasks that would be difficult even with such machines as “simple”: how easily mountains could be moved and transportation refined, and how all of the energy needed by humans can be provided by the “earthstar”. It’s all a bit crazy. His first attempt at making the machine was caused by the insertion of a “perpetual motion car” in one of his stories, where the cab was hung inside a wheel that drove one on forever. My first thoughts, of course, are how does one stop or get in and out? Neither of these potential problems are addressed, and the idea of the machine is jumped to with gusto. The diagrams do show an evolution from this point, but are all very basic and one loses interest slightly with each new one. Fortunately the book is quite short, and it never gets down to a position that is boring. The essays and diagrams are presented in a manner that prevents the reader from becoming bored, and keeps them in the thought process.

The talk of how cities, money, and war will change because of invention is at its best based on very simple theories and not in any particular fact. But, then again, the machine is impossible so the theories are impossible. He starts with talking about how we will exist on other planets, but decides Earth is good enough. This is repeated when he talks about how the financial institutions will fall, but then he wonders what he’ll have to do to continue existing. He is right to believe that inventing such a machine would make him rich, and perhaps equally right that he would either become a target, or his money would become worthless afterwards. All the musing about this makes it easy to climb into his head and understand what he is trying to say a little bit better. Paul is relatable and empathetic as a narrator and author (at least in this text).

But is the book good? Yes, it’s crazy, but good. Seeing how another mind that doesn’t work very similarly to the “common” idea of a person is fascinating. The idea of perpetual motion and the world that such a device would create is equally fascinating. Even knowing that the man is obviously an eccentric (crazy) and that the idea won’t work doesn’t diminish the book. Looking into another’s thought process is always and enlightening experience, and something can certainly be learned from this book, even if it is far removed from a way to make a perpetual motion machine.

Book Review – Damn You Autocorrect by Jillian Madison

I guess you could say I “read” Damn You Autocorrect, even though the book is mostly photos. This doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s just the nature of taking photos of phone conversations. I’d consider the book a picture book, but it does require reading. With that out of the way, Damn You Autocorrect is a book filled with peoples’ phones changing the words they were intending to type into a funny misunderstanding or the like. I read a lot of these things online and quite enjoy them there.  I also like to read books, so the book version was quite welcome.

I won’t say it was an amazing read. It’s what one would expect.  If you like reading autocorrect fails on the internet, this is the same thing in book form, some of which you might have already seen, some you might not have. In the book there is no (bad) swearing.  As that kind of censoring isn’t possible on the internet, I still wouldn’t give it to a kid or even some teens. But it isn’t the swear-fest the same kind of thing is online, which could be good or bad. I found it no less funny.

The chapters are roughly categorized, though they aren’t very different from one another. The screen-caps are all easily visible and in the correct proportions. Full names are omitted, which is always a good thing in these situations. It’s well put together in what seems to be an attempt at justifying it being a physical book. But hey, I bought it, so no need to justify to me. One little snag is it’s all in black and white. I’m guessing this is to keep the cost down since you are just paying for a collection of screen captures.  I can’t fault this, but the online viewing experience is better.

Overall, I like the book, and I’m glad I purchased it. Would I purchase it for full retail price? Maybe, if I had the money to buy more than a few books at full price. Is it worth it? Not really, in my opinion, but I can look at them when the internet isn’t available, I have a reference at least, and I got some laughs I wouldn’t have gotten before. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it’s far from a necessary

Book Review – Panzer Leader – Heinz Guderian (Abridged Edition)

Panzer Leader is the autobiography of Heinz Guderian, a German general, mainly of Panzer troops, in the second World War. The book gives some rough background at its start, but really it’s about WWII. The story begins to develop when Guderian is transferred to the general staff in a position that allows him to view and aid in the development of mechanized and armored forces. It talks for a bit about his prewar ideas, then moves into his actions directly before the war. The book picks up when the war starts, and goes on to explain in great detail his actions in the Polish, French, and Russian campaigns, then his later appointment as Inspector-General of Panzer Troops, and Chief of the Army General Staff.

While the main point of the book seems to be “look how much I was right” (more on that later) there is quite a lot of interesting information regarding how the war played out, especially in the early war when he wasn’t as high a rank. In several cases, he points out how historical figures misrepresented the situation, such as Winston Churchill talking about heavy tanks and heavy artillery marching into Vienna, when in fact none existed in the Germany army at the time. And, in several cases, he states things that are very false as if they were fact.  For instance, the famous myth that Polish cavalry charged at German tanks is listed. Not only did that never happen, but the Polish army had tanks at the time, so the cavalry was at least remotely aware of their capabilities, and even if, as was the case in many armies at the time, the cavalry thought the tanks inferior to them, they would know better than to charge them from the front, as it would result in similar slaughters as the cavalry charges on the trenches had. So the words in the book need to be taken with a grain of salt. The book was published in America in ’57, before all of the information now known about the war had come to light. The version I read is also an abridged version (from ’65) unfortunately, so I can’t comment on several of the parts that may have been omitted that were of importance.

Still, with the book being published (and written, I believe) in the 50s, everything can be seen with the benefit of hindsight, or perhaps with an element of cynicism. Like I said previously, one of the main things Guderian does in the book is go over, sometimes at length, how right he was about a certain situation, or about the inability of the OKH/OKW (the High Commands) to come up with a stable plan (That was likely Hitler’s fault, but still…), or about Hitler making the exact opposite decision to what he was just requested to do. And I’m not going to say that he was wrong most of the time, though he sometimes was (When Guderian argued against Rommel about having a mobile reserve, I’m fairly certain that Rommel’s argument, that the Allied air power wouldn’t permit it, even if the reserve only marched at night {which it didn’t, contrary to everyone who knew anything, but not Hitler’s, orders} was more sound). Still, his going round and round with this talk can be infuriating. If even a few of his positions as described in this book were reality, and I was in his position, I would have resigned long before the majority of the events.

His talks with Hitler are an oddity in historical writing. Every other book I’ve read about peoples’ interactions with the man were very different. According to Guderian he talked matter-of-factly with Hitler, disagreed with him, and attempted to persuade him to the right course of action, all of this done when no one else seemed to dare. He also reports multiple times when Hitler admits (several months after it mattered) that it was Guderian who was correct and he who was wrong. This seems distinctly unlike the modern picture of Hitler (though what is that beyond a faded memory of the face of absolute evil to us?), and it makes it all the more infuriating during the reading when Hitler continues to question and undermine the orders of someone who, according to him (according to the book) has been right in every past scenario. It truly sounds like working with someone who is a madman or a child.

And yet the book doesn’t have Hitler sitting away in a fantasy land (most of the time), pretending to attack with paper formations of troops holding ground behind enemy lines. Indeed, while Hitler didn’t visit the front, he knows very much about what is going on there, and himself ordered the creation of the “paper formations”. Guderian seems unimpressed with this, and really doesn’t attempt to hide his irritation. The early parts of the book seem to read like “we completed the impossible task before us relatively quickly, with minor casualties.  We were then immediately asked to do twice as much, twice as fast, with no time to recuperate or fix our equipment, and we did the next impossible task with half the equipment of the previous one” and the second half like “Everyone’s job was to pretend he had a job, we discussed what to do, Hitler made the decision all of us agreed was the worst possible course of action, and then we were made to complete our impossible orders within our positions that held no power.” In that sense it reads like every historical book about the German military in the second World War.

Guderian’s perspective is obviously biased, both towards Germany (how could it not be?) and to justifying his decisions (read last parenthesis). He skirts around things, like whether or not he approved of Hitler before the war, or how his “gift” of Polish/Prussian land was obtained. The book is constrained almost entirely to military matters, and he goes to great length to show how little damage the troops under his command did to all countries they invaded. I’m not saying he was a true Nazi, or that he didn’t respect the past of the places he ended up. He obvious wasn’t a Nazi, and acted on the field as a most respectable general, but no man is perfect, and certainly Guderian doesn’t admit to any imperfection in this book. He still acts humble, and grateful to his troops, but he is stubborn in defining his positions.

That still isn’t a knock against the book. It is certainly an interesting dive into the man’s mind, and his recollection of the events of the conflict. His perspective is interesting and helps to create a clearer picture of the time. The book is also well written. I don’t know if it was originally in German, or another language, but the English version reads fantastically, with the exception of some of the harder-to-translate German spoken sentences. It’s fast-paced, and sucks the reader into the world presented, and that’s something many fiction writers can’t do. If I have one bad thing to say it’s that there is quite a bit of space devoted to simple, detached sentences of things going on in far off fronts, and too many unit numbers to follow. Each event is recorded as if it is as important as all others when often it is not. This can lead to some confusion as to what units are where doing what, and a disconnect that isn’t present in the rest of the book. When reading exciting talk about his own movements in the center of the German line, a single sentence about the progress in the North seems out of place, and takes one aback for a moment. Even then, the book holds together and is readable.

Overall I’d say the book is a fairly fast, enjoyable, and interesting read. It doesn’t have wide appeal, but is certainly a must for those investigating the personalities and strategies of the second World War. It’s a good book, and I’m glad read it.

Book Review – The Big Book of Weirdos

The “Big Book” series of comic books is weird one. I’ve seen a few, but only ever read this one in full. The Big Book of Weirdos is about various historical figures and their antics, which range from quirky to insane (it’s mostly insane). In general, the book goes by type of person (actor, dictator, etc) and in chronological order, though not always.

The book starts with Caligula (basically), which is never a good choice if one wants a book to remain nice and/or sane. Continuing on from there is a whole host of personalities: Hitler, Tesla, Ford, Kafka, Dali, on and on. Most of these characters get around 6 pages of harsh black-and-white drawing. Many don’t shy away from being repulsive in various ways, and the many artists who took part in the work all have unique ways of looking at things. Some are quite minimalist and attractive, where others are hard to follow, and in many the people just look ugly. I know this is by design in many cases, but there are ways of making people look insane without disfiguring them and disturbing the reader.

Some of the stories are interesting, some a gross, some slow, some fast, some well-known, and some untrue. Syphilis is blamed for many things, and alcohol is a demon. Overall, the storytelling is nice, but too vague, and one is simply told things. The other things that are going on are not even allowed to the imagination, and as I said many things are untrue. Facts weren’t verified entirely for the book, which is fine. It doesn’t try to present itself as a reference, and it shouldn’t be. Its art indicates that it was an exercise, like many of the books in the series, to have many different artists contribute to a common theme. And the art does work well together. The stories and pictures are not jarring, nor badly crafted. They both show the utmost of technical skill, if not the grasp of facts.

But technical skill does not make for pleasant reading, and while the book is a great reference for different art styles, in many cases the art is unattractive. Even the best-rendered visual of people being torn apart isn’t fun to look at (that doesn’t explicitly happen).

The book is interesting, both to read and to look at, but I’m not sure I can recommend it. The various historical figures explored don’t have the time to be more than one-dimensional, insane puppets. There is very little to attach you to them, which may be a good thing in many cases. It’s a fun read at times, and a crazy read, and an interesting read. But I can’t say it’s a good book. Beyond being on a coffee table to start conversation, it isn’t that great. Or perhaps (the reason I keep my copy) it can be used as a reference for different art styles and ways to tell a story.

Book Review – The Rejection Collection Vol 2

The second Rejection Collection is very similar to the first in that it is a wonderfully funny collection of cartoons that didn’t make it into the New Yorker magazine for various (and obvious) reasons. There are a few returning artists, and a few new artists featured, and one is bound to like quite a few of them. This makes it, cartoon-wise, a wonderful look at what cartoonists and editors think shouldn’t be published, and it’s hilarious.

My problem with this second volume is in the more “book” part. There is a questionnaire filled out by each cartoonist, and unlike the first book, where such a paper was very open-ended and allowed for a lot of creativity, this one seems more locked down and contrived. This is ironically (I used the word correctly here, just watch) because it is trying to do the opposite. In trying to intentionally create an open-ended and interesting form, the result is a form that makes the authors’ humor seem forced. Only those who really break all of the form’s rules are very entertaining to read. Only a few are complete duds, and in general they are a bit of fun. They also tend to provide a less-insightful look at the cartoonist, in my opinion. I guess the form had to be different, because some of the artists return, but I do wish that it was more like the original.

That being said, there are certainly some funny and informative moments in the book, and the paper and humor are of a high-enough quality that I don’t feel ripped off. I’d say if you came for the cartoons, the book is great, but if you came to get a closer look at the minds of some of the New Yorker cartoonists, some heavier considerations might be weighed, and the first collection might be better. It’ll take longer to read than the first, and it’s certainly funny, but I just don’t think it’s quite as good.
